Royal Caribbean – Oasis of the Seas Our third cruise was on September 2014 which we sailed from Barcelona and visited Civitavecchia and Naples. @royalcaribbean #royalcaribbean #royalcaribbeanoasisoftheseas #oasisoftheseas #sailing #sea #ocean #cruise #ship #couple #travel #2014 #autumn2014 #meditterean #cruising #traveller #barcelona #europe #spain #italy #blogger #wow #royalmemories
Originally had an interior cabin but suffered with a loud rushing noise from pipes so was upgraded to a Broadwalk Balcony
8402 – Broadwalk Balcony cabin at the aft (back) of the ship.
Royal King size bed, sofa be, TV, telephone, minibar, bathroom with shower, vanity area and a hair-dryer.
The room was spacious and the balcony was a reasonable size but was great as we could see the carousel from the balcony, some restaurants/shops, zip wire, Aqua Theatre and the Sea making it entertaining.
Our cruise adventure log
This was a very special cruise holiday as this was a new ship and the largest cruise ship in the world at the time and what a spectacular feeling it was. We both just wished it was not a 5 night cruise.
Day 1 – boarding the ship at Barcelona
Before boarding Oasis of the Seas we decided to visit Barcelona Zoo which is at Parc de la Ciutadella in Barcelona, Catalonia,. Barcelona Zoo is a lovely open spaced zoo with great large open enclosed enclosures for animals so hardly any cage fencing. There are over 4,000 animals from elephants to lions. Back in 2003 this zoo was internationally known as the home of Snowflake, the only known albino gorilla, but unfortunately she died in 2003 so we never got to see her. However we saw plenty of other gorillas and chimpanzee, However most looked quite fed up and bored or they were just in deep thinking mode that day.
We also got to see some grizzly bears. I especially loved this second shot as he is pulling a face that just makes me think of Elvis Presley “uh huh huh”.
They also show dolphin and sealion shows at this zoo. However I do feel that the enclosure for them was quite small but the dolphins seemed quite happy.
There was so many other animals there and as I mentioned earlier most animals had large open enclosed enclosures which made it great for photography and I am sure with the enclosures not have cages around them must make the animals feel happier as well.
Also before boarding me and Jason went and grabbed some lunch at an amazing restaurant that served the best paella I have ever tasted, so many mussels and large prawns most certainly a seafood lovers dream. The beach in Barcelona as well is large, sandy, clean and beautiful.
Once me and Jason got on board first things first was to unpack our suitcase put on a dress in my case as it was hot today and gallop on down to the carousel as I love carousels and never seen one on a cruise before. It was magical and seriously did not disappoint with it’s many different horses and animals that was sat within the carousel. I just had to sit and do everyone before my cruise was over.
So round and round like a horse on a carousel, we go,
Afterwards we decided to have a game of mini golf. This by far has to be one of the better mini golf areas with its metal statues from a man playing golf to a dog. Certainly looked a classier mini golf. Plus with the ship being newish the green was perfect with no imperfections at all.
After golf and burning off those calories I just had to grab a slice of pizza to add back on the calories.
In the evening me and Jason went and adventured around the cruise at it’s unique art. I particularly loved the crocodile.
A welcome on board parade also happened that day so me and Jason just had to get snapped with Shrek. However I was confused who was Shrek.
Which one is Jason, mmm?
Plus had to get snapped with the Hippo as I love hippos.
After a long day of photographing animals during the day and dancing with animals at night just had to go and get a Strawberry Daiquiri to finish the night off with. Whilst Jason grabbed a Mango drink.
Day 2 – at sea
Today we had to complain about our interior cabin as both of us did not get much sleep due to this rushing noise that happened constantly. I think it was something to do with the pipes to the pools and flow rider. It was so loud if was like sitting in a room full of washing machines. So we had a meeting with the hotel manager today who then upgraded us to a Balcony on Broadwalk. The cabin steward kindly helped us move our clothes over. We was highly impressed by balcony as not only could we see the sea we could also see the carousel and the Aqua theatre so we could potentially watch shows from our cabin if we wanted. However the very best thing though about this cabin was we could not hear the terrible gushing of water noise anymore.
For the rest of the day we made the most of the ship by checking out what was on board and chilling around the pool area in the afternoon to catch up with some sleep as we did not get any last night.
Later we went and played the slot machine tournament in which everyone who enters has to bash the button of the slot machine frantically for 5 minutes. Whoever has the highest score at the end wins the Jackpot cash prize and I won! I was seriously over the moon. It was about £150 as far as I remember. I think I spent most of it on more gambling and drinks.
Tonight was formal night so Tux on for Jason and a dress for me tonight.
We went and watched on this night Oasis of Dreams show. The divers/swimmers were unbelievable with some of them being Olympian champions. We both still can’t believe the height of the diving board and their bravery especially considering we are moving through the sea. They performed each dive with such perfection.
Also I just had to get yet another photo on the carousel but this time with Jason and of course my towel elephant.
Who is sexier me or Mr Elephant with his shades?
Day 3 – Civitecchia
Looking forward today as going on an excursion with Royal Caribbean to see Mozeralla being made and a visit to Pompeii. Last time on our honeymoon back in 2007 we was supposed to visit Pompeii but we never did as we decided not to do in the end back then as the heat was too overpowering.
The Mozzarella was made by a lovely lady who has been doing it practically all her life as she learnt the technique from her mum. The mozzarella was delicious and soft and certainly better than any shop bought mozzarella. This is certainly the most freshest mozzarella you can ever try made right from scratch in front of all our very eyes.
After learning and tasting the wonderful mozzarella we then had a mini tour around the lemon orchard in which they own. The lemons seriously was as big as oranges and so sharp in taste.
Then we went onto Pompeii. Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city with a population of 11,000 people. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 13 to 20 ft of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
It was interesting to hear about the history of Pompeii and learning about the shops and buildings that used to be there. Was interesting seeing in particular the pizza oven. I wonder if their pizzas were as good as the ones I get on Oasis of the Seas. It does make you think though not only is it people that are dangerous in the world but also mother nature herself. Who knows if the volcano will ever erupt again I hope not but only time will tell.
Once we got back on board we dressed to go out and make the most of the night by playing some quiz’s and seeking out Royal Caribbeans resident car on this ship. What a beauty she was black, shiny and elegant.
Day 4 – Naples
Today we stayed on board and made most of the pools and Jacuzzi whilst the ship was quite as most people got off today.
Also I got brave today and went on the zip wire. Here is a video of me.
It was quite frightening before making the jump but once in the air it was fun.
In the evening we went and watched an amazing acrobatic show. There was performers practically flying through the air, jumping, dancing and singing all at the same time at points.
The plane that came out on stage was a spectacle. The show was like being in a theatre in the West End with top class performance and amazing set changes and props.
Afterwards I went and played one of the fun games they have on board where it was me and a few other ladies competing against a team of men. We had to pass balloons between each other, thread a key on a string under our dresses, sing and so on to win points. Us ladies won! so yes you guessed it I won a wonderful plastic keyring, woop another to my collection.
I like to move it, move it!
Later at night there was a large parade with many Dreamworks characters and entertainment staff dancing and singing along the parade. I just had to get my photo snapped with Hong Kong Fu the Panda and Lemur from Madagascar.
Day 5 – at sea
Today was at sea so me and Jason went on a backstage tour and I got to get my photo snapped in front of the huge plane prop they used on their theatre show they performed the other night.
During the day we met Puss in Boots. We both just had to get a purrfect pic with him.
Later in the afternoon we watched another show performed by divers/swimmers at the Aqua theatre called Splish Splash. This show was more on a comical basis and synchronise swimming. However all dives and synchronise swimming was done with high skill.
After being stunned and amazed we went and played a good game of Bingo and just had to get our photo with the most amazing entertaining and kindness of entertainment staff we have ever had on any cruise. They certainly knew how to entertain people and get everyone laughing.
We saw Puss in Boots later on in the evening parade along with Penguins from Madgasscar and many other characters and even carnival performers.
As this was our last dinner on board I just had to have lobster. Plus the waiter we have had on a number of nights showed us one of his favourite magic tricks of two forks balancing on a tooth pick on a salt pot. It was quite impressive.
Both waiters were amazing and always made dining in the main dining restaurant a pleasure.
Later in the evening when we was walking down the parade of shops we bumped into the Penguins from the movie Madagascar. They told us they needed a holiday away from the Zoo.
I had a few more goes on the carousel to finish off the ones I have not ridden on as yet and Jason also decided that night he wanted to have a ride on a few, so round and round and round we went.
We also had our fortune told by Zoltar. Just like the movie Big really we are children at heart.
We then went on to try and turn our fortunes around in money by attending the casino and amazingly we may of not won much that night but we won the raffle which entitled us to two free cocktails, a VIP badge and a t-shirt.
Not a keyring.
Day 6 – disembarking at Barcelona
Sadly it was time to say goodbye to Oasis of the Seas. I loved her so much and 5 days was to short but hopefully one day I will return on her.
As our flight was not until much later in the afternoon to return back to the UK me and Jason decided to go on an excursion around Barcelona in which we visited many different churches and popular statues.
I particularly loved this statue which is called the Sardana Dance Statuary which is located within Parc de Montjuïc dedicated to celebrate typical dance genre performed especially by the Catalonia community.
Plus we got to see a lovely shot of the Oasis of the Seas from Parc de Montjuïc. I just wish I could of jumped right back on it.
Highlights and negatives
- Carousel with it’s many horses and animals.
- The Dreamworks characters on board.
- The Aqua shows which all were entertaining and performed by highly skilled divers and swimmers.
- Bjorn one of the entertainment staff members. He was a delight, so funny, kind and joyful making each quiz and game a laugh.
- Waiter who not only was a great at entertaining with he’s magic tricks.
- Broadwalk Balcony
- Apart from our original interior cabin being noisy.
Pre-book any speciality dining restaurants to secure a table as they can get booked quickly.
Get to the Aqua shows early if you want a seat in the first few front rows.
As we took this cruise many years ago and we was not writing a blog back then so these memories and notes are back from what I can remember of our trip. .
Have you sailed on Oasis of the Seas before and what did you think?
